I didn’t know our admiration of your language was that frustrating. How about we love most of the accents, the ones we’ve heard? And it’s not always easy for a foreigner to hear the difference if they haven’t spent time in England/Britain. Before I actually moved there I couldn’t hear the difference between Scottish, Irish, and accents from the north of England. I still can’t hear the difference between most of the accents from the south/middle of England. I really like most of the British accents, some aren’t as beautiful as others, but they’re still cool to listen to.
This goes for every country. Every country has lots of different accents and dialects. I can’t hear the difference between any of the Swedish accents, but I still think Swedish is a beautiful language and I understand what they’re saying even though I can’t tell you whereabouts in Sweden the dialect’s from.
I think when most people say “oh I love the British accent” they mean what they hear on the telly, they like the way they talk on BBC, they like the way brits speak in films (I’m not sure but do the Monty Python speak the Queen’s English?) and on the radio. I think it’s a bit unfair to say we should all learn to distinguish between all the different accents before we can say we love British accents. It’s like me saying you’re not allowed to say you like the Norwegian language until you’ve learnt the difference between every dialect, and we have A LOT of different dialects. We like the British accents, and the broad spectrum of accents make the English language more beautiful and interesting, I’m very sure the majority of people who say they like the British accents would actually like most of them.
Hannah, this isn’t meant as an attack on you, I just wanted to stand up for foreigners who think British is a beautiful language.

I totally get where you’re coming from- and even though I’m not going to go through every point you made, I agree with everything you said! However I this post is more referring to Americans who entirely disregard the cultural diversity of Britain- England, Wales AND Scotland :)

Yay Sofie!
